Andrew Cuomo resigns

Cuomo, Governor Andrew, announced his resignation Tuesday. It was an abrupt end to a scandal that quickly destroyed his decades-long career in politics. Cuomo, who will replace Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul as the state’s first woman executive, will be leaving office in 14 days.

Cuomo gave a speech lasting more than 20 minutes, pleading innocence to a string of sexual harassment claims and condemning the political climate that prevents him from having a fair trial. He stated that he believes the best thing he could do now, given the facts, was to let the government run again.

Investigators have accused the governor of three acts of sexual molestation in a report by the New York Attorney General Letitia Jam’s office on Tuesday. This includes women both inside and outside the state government. Cuomo also was accused of violating both federal and state laws regarding harassment in the workplace. Although his office referred it to James earlier this year, Cuomo said that the results were an example “of bias” and “lackof fairness” in a judicial system. The President, along with other national Democrats, asked Cuomo for his resignation immediately. They also helped to expedite an impeachment attempt by the Albany legislature.

Cuomo (63) has been accused by 11 women of making unwanted sexual advances. These range from suggestive remarks to unwelcome touch. Lindsey Boylan, an ex-assistant who accused Cuomo of inappropriate sexual advances last winter and kissing her behind closed doors at his office without her consent, was the first woman to come forward. Investigators found that Cuomo’s former top advisor Melissa DeRosa was part of a group who planned to revenge Boylan by leaking confidential complaints about Boylan, while she was working in government.

According to the report, an assistant for Cuomo, who was working as an executive, told staff that Boylan had groped him in his office at his official residence. Brittany Commisso filed a criminal complaint to the Albany Sheriff’s Office, stating that she would be willing to arrest the incumbent governor if the allegations were proven.

A state trooper also made allegations that Cuomo had rubbed his body on her after selecting her from his ranks to protect his squad.

Cuomo stated that he was defending the complaints against them as a matter personal ignorance about allegedly changing ways of dealing with women. He stated, “I did not realize how much the line was being redefined.” “There are cultural and generational shifts that I didn’t fully understand.”

After Cuomo said he had been wrongly accused, he said he wanted to “thank the women who came forward with genuine complaints. Although it is difficult to move on, you have performed an important service.

In February, Boylan’s first speech was the catalyst for Cuomo’s dam breaking against him. Cuomo previously stated that he would not resign, calling it “undemocratic”, and asking for people to wait to see the results of the investigation into James.

James then hired an experienced federal lawyer and a well-known labour attorney. After interviewing almost 200 witnesses and reviewing 74,000 pieces evidence, they came to a unanimous verdict: Cuomo had sexually molested female victims in violation of the law. His office was characterized by a culture of fear that enabled his predatory behavior.

Cuomo’s demise is notable given the highs it reached during the first, darkest days of last year’s pandemic. His televised briefings, in which he described how the state – literally embodied by him — fought the virus that decimated thousands of lives and brought them to a standstill every day, made him famous across the country. Cuomo was admired by many as a competent, steady hand, compared to Trump. However, the governor failed to act quickly enough to stop the spread of the virus, which has claimed the lives of more than 53,000 New Yorkers. Cuomo was particularly criticised for his controversial decision of moving coronavirus-positive patients back to long-term care facilities and nursing homes from congested hospitals. This has resulted in thousands being killed by the virus.

For a man who spent most of his adult life in politics, it was a shocking downfall. Cuomo’s father, Mario Cuomo was his teacher and he served as Secretary of United States Housing and Urban Development and the Attorney General of New York under the Clinton administration. Cuomo’s resignation signifies that he has failed in his mission to succeed Mario, who was elected three times but lost the election for a fourth.
