Seiko celebrates 35th anniversary of 'Tuna' Prospex with limited edition watch

The 1980s were good for Seiko. The Japanese watchmaker experienced an increase in popularity and recognition through clever film placements – think of Arnold Schwarzenegger with the analog / digital Prospex model H558-5009, also known as “Arnie”, in the 1982 action hit Predator or Sigourney Weaver’s futuristic Seiko Giugiaro from Aliens in 1986 – and through innovations without interruption.

Seiko has always recognized the love of watch collectors for its classics. On the occasion of the 35th anniversary of another iconic Prospex, the Seiko “Tuna” diving watch, which was first launched in 1986, the company is launching a limited edition of new “Tunas” in July.

When it was first released, the “Tuna” took the iconic Prospex design, first released in 1975, and added 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) of water resistance. Seiko has also built in a 7C46 quartz movement with up to 5 years of battery life.

The end result was a watch with unmatched accuracy when compared to mechanical or automatic divers.

The new edition of the Quartz Diver’s 35th Anniversary Limited Edition “Tuna” (model S23635J1) from 1986, which will be released this summer, naturally has some updates under the hood.

Features are:

  • Sapphire crystal
  • Lumibrite-coated hands, indexes and bezel
  • Comfortable silicone strap
  • Magnetic resistance
  • Day and date display
  • Caseback marked “LIMITED EDITION”
  • Screw-down crown

When the new editions are available in July 2021, only 1,200 copies will be available for purchase. Earlier models of the “Tuna” Prospex ranged from $ 1,450 (S23629) to $ 2,400 (S23631), but Seiko will release prices later in June. Find out more here:
